International Symposium on the Past, Present, and Future of Turkish- Hungarian Relations

Purpose

Purpose

Hungary, which is a Central European country, has a rich geographical, strategic, and historical background. The relationship between Turkey and Hungary is of particular importance because of the uninterrupted ties between the Turkish and Hungarian nations throughout history. In this context, it is essential to examine the intense relations that have continued throughout history and to evaluate the data of Turkish studies, which Hungarian scholars recognize as a "national branch of science" due to the common history of Turks and Hungarians, and the data of Hungarian studies, which Atatürk established as a sister branch with great foresight, in a comparative manner to shed light on the past, present, and future of Turkish-Hungarian relations. The period in which we are preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our Republic in 2023 is also a harbinger that the 100th anniversary of the Turkey-Hungary Friendship Treaty, signed on December 18, 1923, is approaching. As the Res. & Appl. Centre for Turkish-hungarian Acad. and Sc. Cooperation (TÜMACAM), the duty and responsibility of carrying the legacy inherited from Atatürk, the founder of our Republic, who saw culture as its foundation, into the future, necessitated planning a symposium on "The Past, Present, and Future of Turkish-Hungarian Relations." Such a symposium will bring together Turkish and Hungarian scientists in commemoration of the 100th anniversary, allowing for the exchange of ideas among them and providing a cultural service by drawing lessons from the past of Turkish-Hungarian relations in the light of the data of Hungarian studies in Turkey and the data of Turkish studies in Hungary, and taking steps for the future.

The scope of the symposium that will serve this purpose requires drawing a general historical framework from the "pre-honfoglalás" era of the Hungarians to the present day. Therefore, the historical background that highlights the common historical past and cultural values is used to determine the boundaries of the "past, present and future of Turkish-Hungarian relations." Firstly, the political, socio-cultural, and economic panorama of Turkish-Hungarian relations from the past to the present day will be outlined. The pre- and "post-honfoglalás" relations of the Hungarians will be examined within the scope of the theses on the Turkish-Hungarian kinship. The Ottoman period will be approached from the perspective of the Hungarians and compared. The Hungarian freedom fights during the Habsburg era and their results will be evaluated from the perspectives of Turkish and Hungarian history. The cultural contributions of Hungarian refugees to Ottoman modernization, which are research topics not yet extensively examined in our country, will be emphasized. The relationships during the Atatürk era and afterwards will be discussed up to the present day. The latest data from the discipline of Hungarian Turkology that relate to Turkish culture and history, along with the data presented by Hungarology, will be compared and evaluated with interdisciplinary cooperation.
